The Blue Jackets entered this month with a 6-15-2 record on the season, but Todd Richards club has greatly improved its fortunes by posting a 9-1-1 mark so far in December. Despite the surge, Columbus still finds itself nine points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Minnesota, meanwhile, sits five points removed from the Wests final wild card spot after recording a 4-4-3 mark since the start of December. The low point of the rough month came during a 0-2-3 losing streak, a skid the Wild was able to snap with Mondays road victory in Winnipeg. After dropping the home part of a home-and-home series with the Jets in Saturdays 4-3 overtime loss, the Wild answered with a close win two days later in Winnipeg. Eight years later, Hamlin still had the speed in the No. 11 Toyota to take the top spot at the triangle track. Hamlin turned a track record-lap of 181.415 mph Friday to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup pole, a throwback to the times he dominated qualifying at one of his best tracks. Hamlin is a four-time winner at Pocono, matching his Martinsville mark for most career wins at a track. He swept two Pocono races on its former rugged surface from the pole in 2006. He also won races on the 2 1/2-mile track in 2009 and 2010. "I hope this track has aged a little bit," he said, "because when it was old and worn out was when I was really good at the track." "Things definitely went my way out here tonight," Federer said. "Ive had a lot of tough matches in the last year and a half so it was nice to get a lucky break again." The victory was hard fought as Federer lost the first serve and his serve in the second to trail 3-2. Federers win, his sixth here in the last 12 years, extends his record of winning at least one title a year to 14 consecutive years. This is Federers first tournament victory since winning in Halle, his only title of 2013, last spring. Federer improved his record over Berdych to 12-6 with the win. The last time they played, however, Berdych beat Federer in the Dubai semifinals last year. "Hes the greatest player of all time and hell never give up and give you anything for free," Berdych said. Some think the talented Cutler has been treated unfairly, though, and there is clearly a divide in the locker room, which also could contribute to Trestmans ultimate fate. I feel really bad for Jay, injured kicker Robbie Gould told a Chicago-area radio station this week. When youre having a tough season like this, hes not the guy to be the scapegoat. Theres a lot of guys you can put that blame on. One of those is the offensive-minded Trestman, who is 13-18 as the head coach since replacing Lovie Smith in 2013. Trestman did indeed improve Chicagos offense last season when Chicago averaged 27.8 points per game, second in the NFL, but that has dipped to 20.7 points this time around. The defense, meanwhile, has been a disaster in both seasons under Trestman and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is all but out the door. The Bears have been outscored by almost two touchdowns (13.0 ppg) during their current four-game losing streak, the franchises longest since a five-game hiccup in 2011. Zimmers first season in Minnesota has been hampered by injuries and off- the-field issues with what turned out to be an almost year-long suspension to star running back Adrian Peterson for child abuse, a development that essentially doomed the campaign. Bridgewater, the 32nd overall pick in the 2014 draft, has been a bright spot, really amping up his game over the past month or so. The University of Louisville product has found the end zone at least twice in four of his last five games and the Vikings offense has averaged over 26 points a game over that stretch. How he has handled (the adversity), the things hes gotten done and what hes really done is made everyone around him better and thats a quality that youre looking for (in a quarterback). The Vikings defense has a very difficult time handling the flats in general without standout rookie linebacker Anthony Barr, who is done of the season with a knee injury. The group then imploded against Miami last weekend when veteran linebacker Chad Greenway went down with a knee injury. Greenway hasnt been able to practice this week so keep an eye on Forte, who is fourth in the NFL with 118.1 yards from scrimmage per game. The game also marks the return of veteran defensive end Jared Allen to Minnesota, where he spent the previous six years before signing with Chicago as a free agent. OVERALL ANALYSIS Expect the Vikings to close out the first of their two years at TCF Bank Stadium with a field-goal win in what could be the swan song for the trio of Emery, Trestman and Cutler in Chicago. Watson told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio he was watching the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational when Woods withdrew after hitting his tee shot on the ninth hole because of another injury to his back. "Tiger would be a great addition to our team," Watson said. "As Ive said all along, I would pick Tiger Woods if hes healthy and playing well. This doesnt bode well right now. I just hope that maybe its just an isolated problem that he can turn around and possibly play this week at the PGA." Woods flew home to Florida on Sunday to be evaluated. NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson has a chip fracture in a toe on his right foot and is expected to miss one to three weeks. Hours before Wednesday nights regular-season opener against Indiana, the Pelicans said team doctors discovered the injury after Anderson experienced discomfort during recent practices. Anderson said the injury began to bother him on Monday. "I honestly dont know exactly what it was that did it, but after practice I felt it and it was pretty painful," Anderson said. "I went in to get an X-ray and the X-ray looked good, but I guess they had to do a double take on it and they found a small little chip." The 6-foot-10 Anderson is one of New Orleans top 3-point shooters. Last season, he averaged a career-high 16.2 points per game and shot 38 per cent from 3-point range. He also grabbed 6.4 rebounds per game. When available, Anderson is expected to be one of New Orleans top players coming off the bench and play significant minutes.
